Handloom Development Department, J&K in collaboration with National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC) organized one day workshop - cum - awareness programme at Basohli. Smt. Chandra Gupta (KAS) Director, Handlooms, J&K, Jammu inaugurated and presided over the workshop - cum - awareness programme and Sh.S.H.Ansari, Chief Manager (Comm) NHDC Regional Office, Panipat was the guest of Honour.

While welcoming the participants and responding to the demands of the weavers Mrs.Gupta asked the weavers to avail the benefits under various schemes being implemented by the Handloom Development Department for the welfare of the weavers community. She highlighted that the weavers/co-operative societies should get the benefits under the schemes like:

(1) Share Capital Loan Assistance.
(2) Loan for purchase / modernization / renovation of looms.
(3) Loan for purchase of Sewing Machines.
(4) Education Scheme.
(5) Publicity and Exhibition.
(6) Credit Plan Scheme.
(7) Mahatama Gandhi Bunkar Bima Yojana (MGBBY).
(8) Health Insurance Scheme.

The department is also implementing the Centrally Sponsored Scheme like Integrated Handloom Development Scheme (1HDS) under which the two clusters Samba and Billawar have been sanctioned by Govt.of India. She further emphasized on the production of quality products of Pashmina, Cotton and Raffal for better marketing.

Smt. Promil Pande prominent designer of India elaborated in details the scope of development of new designs of different products as per the market trends for better marketing to get the good returns.

Sh.S.H.Ansari ,Chief Manager, NHDC deliberated upon the supply of yarn to weavers on the cheapest rates i.e Mill Gate Price Scheme (MGPS) and the Introduction of Handloom mark on the products. Some forms were also distributed among weavers to get the Handloom Market. The Pashmina growers from Leh also participated and assured the supply of quality raw pashmina.

More than 300 weavers engaged in weaving of Pashmina shawls Cotton, Raffal, Woollen Fabrics participated in the workshop. Sh.Shiv Kumar Padha, Sh.Zakir Hussain and President of Muncipal Committee Basohli highlighted the various problems being faced by Handloom weavers of Basohli Tehsil. The Chief Guest assured that there genuine grievances shall be redressed on priority.She further disclosed that the Co-operative Societies of Basohli shall be recommended in National & special Handloom Expos. Besides, an exhibition is also being organized shortly at Jammu to facilitate the Co-operative Societies / Weavers for better marketing of their products. A buyer - seller meet is also being organized at Samba for interaction. The others prominent speakers includes Sh.Mohd Mumtaz Ali, Deputy Director, Sh.Subash Gupta, Assistant Director, Kathua , Sh.Abdul Basit, Assistant Manager(NHDC) etc.
